Gretchen Rubin | Clutter

Outer order creates inner calm.

Outer order creates inner calm.

Confession: This whole blog could very well just be a Gretchen Rubin fan blog. I love how she devours all sorts of research and anecdotes in order to distill them to her readers in a fascinating and completely relatable way. In my mind, Gretchen and I are the best of friends.

In her very popular book The Happiness ProjectGretchen spends part of the first month of her project attacking clutter. She writes,

"To use the first month of my happiness project to tackle clutter seemed a bit small-minded, as if my highest priority in life were to rearrange my sock drawer. But I craved an existence of order and serenity - which, translated into real life, meant a household with coats hung in the closet and spare rolls of paper towels."

One of Gretchen's most-cited Rules of Adulthood is "Outer Order Creates Inner Calm." I think very few people would disagree.
