Deborah Needleman writes in her book, The Perfectly Imperfect Home that every home should have a 'bit of ugly.' I absolutely love this phrase, as I am drawn to the twisted beauty of imperfection, but I think what she more accurately means is that every home should have balance.

Think of a few adjectives that describe your home (or desired home) - clean, fun, bright, formal, casual. Then consciously try to incorporate a couple items that are decidedly not these things - unkempt, soothing, dark. It will bring balance and personality to a home. It's far better for your home to have a little ugly in it than to look like a Restoration Hardware showroom.
