Designer Profile | David Hicks
These days you might be more familiar with David Hicks' daughter, India, but during the 1960's in England (and eventually the U.S.), David came to define the style of the era. He mixed bold colors and large-scale patterns. When he could not find any carpets that fit his design objective, he designed them himself, ultimately creating a very successful product line. His marriage to Lady Pamela Mountbatten in 1960 widened his social circle to include the royal family, making him the go-to consultant for Windsor Castle and the Prince of Wales.
As for negative (or at least debatable) personality traits, Mr. Hicks, though ordinarily charming, was often said to fly into an "apoplectic rage." He also designed his own coffin prior to his death and left detailed instructions as to where and how he was to be buried. Once a designer, always a designer?
