Interior Design | Authenticity
Authentic interiors are not overly designed. Coming from an interior designer, this might seem like a counter-intuitive statement, but designers can only do so much to make a house a home. They can lay the ground work by creating a beautiful back-drop, but after that, the designer walks away and real life begins. Although I don't always love the items that clients choose to add, the home is now their canvas to work with. It has to evolve with them and their day to day needs.
One of the most important distinctions of an authentic interior is that they draw inspiration from other spaces and places, but do not try to replicate them verbatim. They make them their own, adding elements of their own lifestyle and personality. If the homeowner loves to read, there might be books strewn about, so that any lucky visitor can happen upon them and feel free to pick one up herself. The home reflects the inhabitants lifestyle and priorities. If your home looks like you made a one-stop-shop to Restoration Hardware, then it is unfortunately not going to come across as authentic. Rather, authentic homes look layered and collected, like they've evolved over time.
