Commercial Design | Residential Influence

Commercial Design | Residential Influence

I don't typically work within commercial interior design, but I would surmise that it is more common for a commercial space to be influenced by a residential aesthetic than the other way around. This is particularly true in the hospitality industry (restaurants and hotels). If you think of your favorite places to eat or stay, there's a good chance that at least some of them have residential qualities - i.e. you feel like you're sitting around your family's table, in a candle lit room, enjoying time together.

I ate lunch at East Hampton Sandwich Co. here in Dallas yesterday and was particularly struck by their design elements. From looking online, it appears that the firm Studio 11 is responsible for the interiors of both the East Hampton Sandwich Co. restaurants in Dallas and did an excellent job. Below are some detail pictures I took of the Oaklawn location while waiting on my lunch. It's very clear that the design objective was to create an eatery with an East Coast beach house vibe, as the restaurant's name implies. Also - this was a very early lunch if you are wondering why the restaurant was completely empty...

A very cute design moment, with an unfortunately very dirty floor... But the painted millwork and tile with an inset border is something that would be very easy to create in one's own home.
